Poetry, Grades 7 - 9: First Place

broken heaven - zoe goldstein

in billowing wheat fields
and dusty, living thoughts
that dwell in your eyes
it's almost as if this country is ours
this beauty that stretches
out elastic hopes
across hollow trails
that paved lines
across your face.

i am the beads
that weave down your spine
the reason you
dance with your hands
and play piano with your toes
let's just sit awhile
so I can hear
the wind smile as you laugh
and rub away the sand
from the corners of your eyes.

and somehow
i can feel your rough skin
make sandpaper waves in mine
and feel the pulse of your soul
supporting my own.

as you find
your way to ecstasy
the light we shared
closes in.
the beauty that you gave
is now cracked
and gone.

a broken heaven.
