Poetry, Grades 10 -12: First Place

A Light - Sarah Mizrachi

A wondrously gentle and complex childhood
Is like a flame beginning with a small bit of wood.
It reaches upwards in a magnificent trail,
With light and warmth, upwards it sails,

Can I last without a light in the sky?
Can I live without a need to ask why?
Life is nothing without a light to yearn towards,
The reason a fire reaches upwards,
Life is a purpose, a reason to try,
If not, why live, why love, why try?
